According to the latest Foreign Trade report, recently published by the BCR, El Salvador’s energy exports totaled $61.5 million in the first 10 months of the year.

El Salvador’s energy exports continue with an upward trend, thanks to the work of President Nayib Bukele’s government in the different electricity generation projects, as well as those promoted by the private sector.

According to the Foreign Trade report, recently published by the Central Reserve Bank (BCR), El Salvador’s energy exports totaled $61.5 million, registering an increase of 89.8% in the first 10 months of the year.

Likewise, the president of the BCR, Douglas Rodríguez, indicated that this sector has been one of the most dynamic for the Salvadoran economy and that up to the second quarter it registered an increase of 16.8 %, compared to the same period last year.

For its part, the General Directorate of Energy, Hydrocarbons and Mines (DGEHM), detailed that, from July to October of this year, the country had exported 539,444.14 megawatt hours (MWh), which are destined to Central American countries, being Guatemala, Costa Rica, Honduras and Nicaragua the main buyers.

DGEHM statistics indicate that in October of this year alone, El Salvador exported 128,980.5 megawatt hours.

According to the DGEHM, the positive performance of the country’s energy sector in the Regional Electricity Market (MER) is due to the actions promoted by President Nayib Bukele, which have built the foundations for sustainable and efficient development.

However, he emphasized that the commercialization of energy to neighboring countries is carried out after covering the demand of Salvadoran households and productive sectors in the territory.

Additionally, he reported that in this period there was also a minimal, and non-representative, proportion of imports due to some effects caused by the El Niño phenomenon.

Boost to energy generation

In order to continue generating and supplying the national demand, as well as the regional market, the Government recently delivered the 3 de Febrero Hydroelectric Power Plant, which to date has boosted the generation of renewable energies in El Salvador.

According to the DGEHM, only in October of this year, hydroelectric generation represented 46.4 % of the energy matrix; followed by natural gas with 25.4 %, then geothermal with 18.6 % and solar with 7.2 %.

With the new projects of the Government together with those of private companies, El Salvador seeks to reach 100% of energy generation with renewable sources.
