Universidad Católica de El Salvador (UNICAES) was founded on April 13, 1982, according to the Constitutional Act. Its main headquarters is located in the city of Santa Ana, where the Rectorate and administrative offices are situated. Its Statutes were approved by the Ministry of Education through Executive Agreement No. 1210, dated June 25, 1982.
The University, by foundation, history, and practice, is associated with the Diocese of Santa Ana, which is part of the Catholic Church. The fact that His Holiness John Paul II, on December 18, 1982, through the Sacred Congregation for Catholic Education, approved the foundation of the Universidad Católica de Occidente, now Universidad Católica de El Salvador, which is legally entrusted to the Bishop of the Diocese of Santa Ana, determines the Catholic identity of the University.
Over time, UNICAES has had student exchanges, faculty exchanges, and other academic collaborations with universities from other countries, including Spain, the United States, Italy, Mexico, Colombia, Canada, Sweden, the Czech Republic, Germany, among others.
Universidad Católica de El Salvador (UNICAES) educates professionals of integrity, with a conscious possession of knowledge and moral stature, to encourage them to serve their country and fellow human beings honestly and effectively. Its mission is: the formation of individuals, inspired by Christian principles and technical and scientific knowledge, oriented towards a constant pursuit of truth and the use of knowledge, to contribute to the protection and development of human dignity and society, through research, teaching, and social outreach. The philosophy of UNICAES is encapsulated in the Latin phrase of our emblem: “LITTERAE SINE MORIBUS VANAE” (Knowledge without Morals is Useless). Scholarship without ethics lacks a proper foundation.
