According to the latest Foreign Trade report, recently published by the BCR, El Salvador’s energy exports totaled $59.3 million in the first nine months of the year.
El Salvador’s energy exports continue with an upward trend, thanks to the work of President Nayib Bukele’s government in the different power generation projects, as well as those promoted by the private sector.
According to the Foreign Trade report, recently published by the Central Reserve Bank (BCR), El Salvador’s energy exports totaled $59.3 million, registering an increase of 109.3% in the first nine months of the year.
Likewise, the president of the BCR, Douglas Rodríguez, indicated that this sector has been one of the most dynamic for the Salvadoran economy and that up to the second quarter, it registered an increase of 16.8 %, compared to the same period last year.
For its part, the Dirección General de Energía, Hidrocarburos y Minas (DGEHM), detailed that from January to August of this year, the country had exported 419 gigawatt hours (GWh), which are destined for Central American countries, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Honduras and Nicaragua the main buyers.
According to the DGEHM, the positive performance of the country’s energy sector in the Regional Electricity Market (MER) is due to the actions promoted by President Nayib Bukele, which have built the foundations for sustainable and efficient development.
However, he emphasized that the commercialization of energy to neighboring countries is carried out after covering the demand of Salvadoran households and productive sectors in the territory.
Additionally, he reported that in this period there was also a minimal, and not representative, proportion of imports due to some effects caused by the El Niño phenomenon.

Boost to energy generation
In order to continue generating and supplying the national demand, as well as the regional market, the Government delivered last Friday the 3 de Febrero Hydroelectric Power Plant, which will boost the generation of renewable energies in El Salvador.
The plant will generate 66 megawatt hours (MWh) of energy and will benefit more than 2 million people to whom it provides electricity, assured the president of the Comisión Ejecutiva Hidroeléctrica del Río Lempa (CEL), Daniel Álvarez.
«The plant has two turbines that generate 33 megawatt hours each. […] We are already injecting at full load, and we have also projected what will enter the energy matrix, which is working at 100% as it should be», explained the oficial.
The official added that the extension of the 3 de Febrero reservoir covers part of San Miguel and Morazán, and that it has 44 kilometers of transmission line that connects to the substation of the 15 de Septiembre Hydroelectric Power Plant, to then be injected into the national grid.
He also commented that the plant has an additional turbine of 1.4 megawatts for the project’s self-supply and self-consumption, without affecting the generation destined for Salvadoran homes.
He added that the dam has state-of-the-art technology, which can be operated from a tablet in an already established perimeter, as well as an anti-fire system to avoid human losses such as those that occurred during the FMLN government.
On the other hand, the official commented that, in the last four years, the project generated 7,000 jobs, between direct and indirect, which were prioritized for people from the surrounding áreas.
