The government of El Salvador is expanding the container yard at Port of Acajutla

Officials of the Government of President Bukele, inaugurated this day, the expansion of the container yard of the Port of Acajutla, Sonsonate. With this investment, they will have the capacity to mobilize 100,000 additional containers annually to those already in place, they assured. The total capacity will be 350,000.

The event was presided over by Federiko Anliker, president of the Autonomous Port Executive Commission (CEPA), and highlighted that they have mobilized more than 5 million metric tons in imports and exports, and more than 130 thousand containers, so far this year.

He was accompanied by Juan Murillo, Vice President of Revenue of the Ministry of Finance, and Raúl Medrano, Deputy Legal Director of the Treasury.

This new container yard has seven 30-meter-high towers for lighting and is equipped with its electrical substation. It was also designed with storage areas, circulation lanes for cargo handling equipment, and internal and external lanes for heavy transport. It measures 91 thousand square meters and has an investment of $8.2 million.

Along with this, they also presented the acquisition of loading equipment for the proper operation, with Straddle Carrier type cranes, valued at $ 2.2 million.
They explained that this is part of the Expansion and Modernization Plan of the Port of Acajutla. This is one of the most important logistic points that the country currently has, both in the import and export of raw materials and finished products.

“In the government of President Nayib Bukele, we are working hard to develop the logistics platform through works aimed at enhancing the cargo capacity and boosting the growth of the economy”.

Anliker affirmed, that this investment was necessary, since the figures of operations for the year 2023, increased continuously in the mobility of cargo compared to last year, and exemplified by comparing, that, from November 20 to 26, they mobilized more than 109 thousand metric tons in imports and exports, which means 14% more than the year 2022.

“This increase reflects the hard work and dedication of our talented team, as well as the significant investment in infrastructure and equipment that we have been making,” the official highlighted.

He also detailed that the attention of vessels increased by 20%, in container mobility by 204%, and by 108% in TEUs. In addition, he reported a solid growth in port operations of 4.5 %.
