El Salvador seeks to establish new trade relations and expand the exportable supply of gourmet chocolate and specialty coffee in the Turkish market.

Turkey has become an important trading partner of El Salvador. Last year, until November, it bought $1.3 million in Salvadoran products, according to the Central Reserve Bank (BCR).

Data from the state bank indicate that coffee (roasted or decaffeinated) has become the main product traded in the Turkish market. The country has also sold in Turkey textile products and footwear with rubber soles, plastic, natural or regenerated leather, among others, according to the November report of the BCR.

To boost trade with that country, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through the Salvadoran embassy in that nation, recently held a coffee and gourmet chocolate tasting event prepared with Salvadoran cocoa.

According to the Ministry, the event, called “Demonstration & Tasting Event: Gourmet Chocolate and Specialty Coffee from El Salvador”, was held in order to establish new trade relations and expand the country’s exportable supply of Salvadoran coffee and chocolate.

The Foreign Ministry also explained that the event was held in coordination with the Ankara Chamber of Commerce (ATO) and the Turkish company “Sister and Brother”, which has established direct trade relations with Salvadoran producers of cocoa and coffee.

On the other hand, a workshop was also organized for the elaboration and tasting of gourmet chocolate and specialty coffee.

“The day was developed in two sessions, with a demonstration led by a Turkish businessman expert in the import industry and marketing of cocoa and coffee products, who led a workshop on preparation and tasting of our specialty coffee, as well as gourmet chocolate prepared with Salvadoran cocoa,” said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs through a statement.

The ambassador of El Salvador in Turkey, Héctor Jaime, said that the activity highlighted El Salvador as a producer of fine cocoa beans and specialty coffee in the consumer market of the capital city of Ankara, in order to position both products in that market.

A total of 25 attendees participated, including businessmen and commercial, retail and wholesale representatives of the Professional Committees of the Ankara Chamber of Commerce (ATO).
