The renowned US newspaper highlights that “El Salvador has improved drastically in tourism and security issues” and places it among a selection of countries around the world recommended to visit in 2024.

The New York Times highlighted El Salvador among the 52 destinations to visit in 2024, in a special issue in which it makes a compilation of the most recommended countries to visit for their tourist attractions and gastronomy. It also highlights that it is a nation with important progress in security matters.

According to said media, “El Salvador has improved drastically” in terms of tourism and security. The New York Times details that, thanks to the changes that have benefited the tourism industry sector, the country has managed to open a variety of businesses such as hotels and restaurants that “had been ignored for a long time”.

“El Salvador’s security situation has improved drastically, opening up large areas of the country. Hotels and restaurants long ignored are experiencing renewed interest,” said journalist Nicholas Gill in his publication for The New York Times, who also praises Salvadoran coffee.

The article reviews some areas and tourist sites that stand out among a variety of options to visit in 2024, including the Ruta de Las Flores, the night market in Nahuizalco, the haute cuisine restaurant “El Xolo”, located in the National Museum of Anthropology (MUNA), in San Salvador, to name a few examples.

The article also highlights El Salvador’s beaches, which in addition to their spectacular natural beauty, many of them have achieved worldwide fame for their surfing potential, which is why President Nayib Bukele gave life to one of the country’s most important tourism projects in the area of La Libertad, known as Surf City, which also hosts the most important championships of this sport worldwide.

The New York Times also cites some of the places that are already well known by nationals and foreigners within its circuit of beaches and piers, among them “Chepe Aleta”, in El Zonte; and El Tunco Beach. “Along the coasts, government initiatives, such as the new pier and the seafood market in the Port of La Libertad, receive the most attention”, reads the article.

Likewise, the U.S. newspaper suggests getting to know coffee shops such as “Carajo” and “Crafters”, to highlight that another of El Salvador’s potentials is the national coffee. Thus, the Times shows that one of the great qualities of El Salvador is that it offers its visitors the experience of knowing on the same day its natural attractions, such as beaches and mountains, and the entertainment of a great city that includes a varied offer of haute cuisine restaurants.

It is worth mentioning that, according to an official balance, El Salvador received 10 million visitors to public tourist sites in 2023 alone.

Likewise, the tourism sector in the country currently represents 10% of the Gross Domestic Product thanks to government strategies, including public safety. Recent official figures place El Salvador with the lowest homicide rate per 100,000 inhabitants in Latin America, 2.4, which makes it the safest country in the region.
